Lemongrass essential oil is obtained from Cymbopogon nardus , a plant of the Poaceae family .

Known for its numerous properties, it has a repellent action against mosquitoes and insects, and helps in case of stress and headache.

Properties and benefits of lemongrass essential oil

Stimulating: the essential oil of lemongrass carries out its stimulating activities on the nervous system: generates a state of calm, relaxation and optimism, drives away the gloomy thoughts that dispose the soul to depression and sadness.

It has a positive action useful in case of headache due to nervous tension, stress, psychophysical fatigue and states of deconcentration. Used when driving for many hours, a few drops on the handkerchief, stimulates the driver's attention.

Antiviral it is an excellent remedy against influenza and parainfluenza viruses, fever, lung infections that cause cough, and enterocolitis.

Mosquito repellent, if widespread in the environments, it is the excellent remedy against mosquitoes and to prevent annoying insect bites and stings. Putting some on cotton balls and stowed in closets and drawers will help keep moths away and will pleasantly scent clothes.

Antispamodic: relaxes the muscles, therefore it is indicated in case of spasms, abdominal cramps, for diarrheal colitis and in general for all muscle pains.

Deodorant: like all essential oils, it has an antiseptic action on bacteria, especially those that cause bad odors. If diluted 2 drops in the water of the foot bath it is effective against excessive sweating. If used a few drops in the shampoo, it has a purifying action on the scalp, in case of oily hair and seborrhea.

Use and practical advice on lemongrass essential oil

Environmental diffusion: 1 gc for each square meter of the environment in which it spreads, by means of an essential oil burner, as a repellent for insects.

Suffumigi: against colds and coughs, put 8 drops of lemongrass essential oil in a bowl of boiling water, cover your head with a towel and inhale for 3-4 minutes, stop for a couple of minutes and resume inhaling until the water releases more steam.

Deodorant bath: in the water of the tub put 12-15 drops of essential oil of lemongrass essential oil and soak for at least a quarter of an hour. This bath is particularly pleasant during the summer season, when you sweat a lot.

Relaxing massage: dilute 3 drops of lemongrass essential oil in 2 teaspoons of sweet almond oil . If massaged on the belly it is useful for those suffering from meteorism, or abdominal spasms; when applied on the forehead and temples, this mixture is indicated against headaches caused by nervous tension.

Mosquito cream: in 100 ml of neutral moisturizer, put 20 drops of lemongrass essential oil. Mix thoroughly and thoroughly. Use this cream on the skin, during the summer evenings, to keep mosquitoes away.

Contraindications of lemongrass essential oil

In some individuals allergy may occur when in contact with the leaves of the plant. It is therefore not recommended to use pure essential oil on the skin.

Excessive and prolonged inhalation can therefore increase the heart rate not recommended for those suffering from tachycardia and palpitations. To be avoided during pregnancy.

Description of the plant

Evergreen perennial aromatic herbaceous plant, native to Sri-Lanka, is also successfully cultivated in Java and Ceylon, it forms dense, erect tufts, which reach 70-100 cm in height during the vegetative period.

The leaves , ribbon-like, 60-70 cm long, are bright green, with a papery consistency, quite thick, hanging; they are carried by erect, rigid stems, similar to small bamboos. Leaves and stems give off an intense scent, which becomes very strong if they are rubbed between the fingers.
